Verification

Because we start our spectroscopy observational experience from scratch, one task was to verify if we are able to perform reasonable observations. This start from scratch is valid for both aspects: knowlege about principal setup and procedures for data processing as well the practical aspect of performing spectroscopic observations.

As software environment, we decided to use the well known and well developed MIDAS package

In order to verify that we obtained sufficient knowhow, we observed Arcturus using the "Friesenheimer Lichteimer = Newton 510/2150 extented to 5400mm"). As spectrograph we used a LhiRes III with a 2400lines/mm grid and 15µ slit and as CCD an Atik 383 L+.
The spectrum was positioned on H-Alpha with an exposure of 600s in binning = 2 modus.

As comparison spectrum we took a spectrum of Arcturus obtained at ESO VLA available through ESO Archive Science Portal.
To make both spectra compareable we average the ESO spectrum from R = 107200 to a level the LHiRes can achive which is about R=15000.

Comparison of ESO VLT obtained spectra (ADP.2017-10-25T20:19:10.630) of Arcturus with spectra obtained with LHiRes III.
